Islas Malvinas War Memorial, Plaza San Martin, Buenos Aires, Argentina
On Wednesday, 3rd March, 2010, at the Malvinas War Memorial, Plaza San Martin, Buenos Aires, at 10.45 am, the following was dedicated to British and Argentine personnel who lost their lives during the Falklands War of 1982:
1) One poppy wreath with an Irish Tricolour: Irish Seamen's Relatives Association (1939-46):
2) One poppy wreath with the official insignia of Merchant Navy Association, Wirral Branch, Birkenhead, UK:
3) One poppy wreath with the official insignia of the Royal Naval Association, Birkenhead, UK:
4) One poppy Wreath with the insignia of the Royal Naval Patrol Service Association, Lowestoft, UK:
5) One poppy wreath donated by Mr Norman Earl, Merchant Navy Association, Wirral Branch, without any official centre was placed on behalf of the above Associations to remember all the veterans and their families. This was placed by a young Argentine boy of British Irish descent as a symbol of hope for the future. An altar poppy cross was also placed in memory of all those missing in action. The procedure was the same as in all the other previous memorial events.
A Piper was in attendance and played the lament Flowers of the Forest as a tribute to all the dead. Laurence Binyon's Poem ODE TO THE FALLEN was recited in English, Irish and also read in Spanish by a young Argentine lad prior to the wreath laying. The remembrance events at the British and German Cemetery’s including the event at the Malvinas Memorial, is the first time that any poppy wreaths have been placed in such a formal way heretofore, and, it was a privilege to do so on behalf of the Associations concerned. Note the wreath with the tricolour ribbon attached:

MNA MAGAZINE FULL AHEAD

The Merchant Navy Association commissions a newsletter four times per year in Spring, Summer, Autumn and Winter.

The newsletter offers regular features such as ‘Around The Branches’, where each of the branches has an opportunity to tell their news or pass on their stories, ‘Postbag’ where individuals get their opportunity to have their say, request help or just tell their news. Many interesting stories appear in each of the issues, many of which tell of days of old (and some not so old) as well as bring back memories for many. Each issue looks at the latest book releases to offer an insight into what is available and receives a special review mostly by the editor himself. Also in each issue we find ‘Ships In Profile’, a series of articles giving details of a different ship in each issue.

Merchant Navy Medal

 MN Medal 01

Merchant Navy Medal for Meritorious Service

In 2015, Her Majesty, The Queen graciously signed the Royal Warrant for the new State Award - the “Merchant Navy Medal for Meritorious Service”. This can only be presented to those who have served at sea, importantly still in any capacity, in the Merchant Navy or Fishing Fleets. The normal eligibility criteria are for a minimum of 20 years’ service, some of which must be afloat and any remainder within the industry. The number of awards granted annually remains at a maximum of 20. Those without service at sea but have made an important contribution to the merchant service or fishing fleets can, of course, have their names submitted for other national Honours.

The original committee Merchant Navy Medal committee now acts in advisory capacity to the Department of Transport, which welcomes the range of knowledge among its members. The names of the recipients are announced each year on Merchant Navy Day - 3rd September - and the medals are awarded on, or around that date, by HRH The Princess Royal in her capacity as Master of Trinity House. The ceremony continues to be kindly hosted and funded by Trinity House London.
